Personal information collected by the South Asia Infant Feeding Research Network (“SAIFRN”) through www.saifrn.org (“the Site”) is handled in accordance with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) (“the Act”). This Privacy Statement describes the ways in which SAIFRN deals with personal information and other data collected through SAIFRN’s websites.
What is Personal Information?
Personal Information is defined in the Act as being information or an opinion about an individual whose identity is apparent or can reasonably be ascertained from that information or opinion. Personal Information includes, for example, names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth and passport numbers. There are circumstances in which, under the Act, information about an individual is not considered to be Personal Information, including:
- when it relates to a person who has been dead for more than 30 years; and
- when it is contained in a publicly available publication.

There are many aspects of the site that can be viewed without providing personal information, however, for access to SAIFRN publications and reports you are required to submit personally identifiable information. This may include but is not limited to name, email address, unique username, password and sensitive information to facilitate the recovery of your lost password.
Information that you disclose in online forums or other interactive media is considered by SAIFRN and the common law to be public information and may therefore not be subject to protection under the Act.
Automatic collection of information:
For each visitor to reach the site, we expressively collect the following non-personally identifiable information, including but not limited to browser type, version and language, operating system, pages viewed while browsing the Site, page access times and referring website address. This collected information is used solely internally for the purpose of gauging visitor traffic, trends and delivering personalized content to you while you are at this Site.
Use and disclosure of your personal information
Personal information provided by you via the www.saifrn.org website will be used by SAIFRN for the primary purpose for which you provided it and for other secondary purposes directly related to that primary purpose.
We may occasionally hire other companies to provide services on our behalf, including but not limited to developing website functionalities and disseminating communications to subscribing members. Those companies will be permitted to obtain only the personal information they need to deliver the service. SAIFRN takes reasonable steps to ensure that these organisations are bound by confidentiality and privacy obligations in relation to the protection of your personal information.
SAIFRN will not otherwise disclose your personal information without your consent unless otherwise authorised by law. SAIFRN may disclose personal information to a third party if the disclosure is necessary to prevent or lessen a serious and imminent threat to the life or health of you or another person.
Personal information collected through www.saifrn.org which is no longer required by SAIFRN and which need not be retained by law will be destroyed.
Accessing Your Personal Information
You have a right to access your personal information, subject to exceptions allowed by law. If you would like to do so, please let us know. You may be required to put your request in writing for security reasons.
